Multivitamin

A cheap insurance policy for a patchy diet — not a substitute for eating well.

EVIDENCE
Limited
TYPICAL DOSE
One serving daily as directed on the label
TIMING
With a meal, which improves absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins.
WHAT IT IS

A broad, low-dose mix of vitamins and minerals meant to cover small gaps in an average diet.

WHY (OR WHY NOT)

Can help fill shortfalls if your diet is restricted, monotonous or low in vegetables. It won't out-run a poor diet, and a varied one makes it largely redundant — food delivers nutrients in forms and combinations a pill can't replicate.

CAUTIONS
  • !More isn't better — avoid stacking a multivitamin with separate high-dose vitamins without a reason.
  • !If a specific nutrient is low (iron, B12, vitamin D), a targeted supplement guided by a blood test beats a scattergun multi.

Note:General information, not medical advice. Supplements interact with medications and conditions — check with your doctor before starting anything, especially if you're pregnant, nursing or managing a health condition.
