HMB
A leucine metabolite pitched for muscle preservation — the clear effects are mostly in untrained or dieting people.
Beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate, a compound your body makes from the amino acid leucine, thought to reduce muscle breakdown.
Some support for preserving muscle in beginners, older adults, or during aggressive dieting. In trained lifters eating enough protein, the benefit is small to none — the eye-catching early studies haven't held up well. Adequate protein does most of what HMB claims to.
- !Prioritise total protein and training before considering this.
- !Most useful, if at all, during a hard cut or a return from a layoff.
