Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR)

A carnitine form that crosses into the brain — marketed as a nootropic, with mostly thin human evidence.

EVIDENCE
Limited
TYPICAL DOSE
0.5–2 g daily
TIMING
Earlier in the day, as it can feel mildly stimulating.
WHAT IT IS

An acetylated form of L-carnitine that reaches the brain, sold for focus, mood and 'energy' rather than for training.

WHY (OR WHY NOT)

Some early evidence in older adults and specific clinical situations, but little to support the cognitive or fat-loss claims in healthy younger people. Treat it as experimental.

CAUTIONS
  • !Evidence for everyday cognitive benefit in healthy people is weak.
  • !Can cause restlessness or GI upset; start low.
